about

Back by popular demand!
Here at last is the much sought after debut album from The Upper Fifth released on CD over a decade ago, which was Mark ‘Syd’ McGounden’s pre-Deep Six musical outing.
An absolute storming affair that easily reflected their live performances at the time, which encompassed all the sounds that mattered to them.
Jangly guitars, pounding drums, dynamic bass lines and the sound of the Hammond organ holding it all together.
They often came across as too heavy for some delicate ears, and even though they were clearly 60s influenced (such as their homage to the Rolling Stones in their album sleeve), they always remembered the quote from a mod promoter when he heard them in the soundcheck saying “Blimey, I didn’t know I was hiring a rock band!”
Melodic but powerful with intricate harmonies coupled with some shades of early Deep Purple, the songs include a variety of styles all produced under the delicate guidance of non-other than Nigel Clarke of the legendary band Dodgy!
Recorded at his personal studio, his musical skills and ideas easily married themselves well to the bands philosophies, and if you listen well enough you’ll hear his little guest appearances here and there.
10 tracks with three added bonus tracks taken from their only maxi-single release, it includes their ever so popular rendition of Ronnie Lane’s ‘The Poacher’, which was always in demand by the audience.
So listen on and enjoy a slice of Birmingham Power pop in all its glory from the boys…

about

The Deep Six UK Winchester, UK

From the ashes from Makin Time comes Mark McGounden's recent outing into the world of pop songwriting.

Along with Neil Clitheroe, Niall Keohane and Ade Martin they manage to produce a variety of musical styles which are clearly drawn from the 60s, yet still manage to sound contemporary and original with tremendous vocal harmonies reminiscent of bands such as The Hollies or The Byrds.
